Lord Basavanna,founder of veerashaiva community.Basavanna became the revolutionary who taught that right conduct is heaven. He was a great Saint, free thinker, rationalist, revolutionist, philosopher and social reformer lived during the period 1134-1196 A.D., describing himself as the “HUMBLEST OF ALL”. He evolved “VISHWA MANAVA DHARMA”, a religious order based on humanism and scientific spirituality. He gave a new dimension to the life and living of mankind and the living world.
Basaveshwara propagated moral, ethical and spiritual values for a peaceful and purposeful life. Social Equality was the breath of Basava’s philosophy. His revolutionary reforming movement included basic principles like compassion, universal love, truth, equality, simplicity, Kayaka (Holiness of work) and Dasoha (Devine charity).
He declared that engaging in work is itself Heaven and taught the ideals of simple living and the equality between men and women. People called him Anna (Big brother) because he practiced what he preached.
Shree Basava (also known as Basaveshwara or Basavanna) brought on a social transformation, often referred as "revolution," in that he have been a mystic by temperament, an idealist by choice, a statesman by profession, a man of letters by taste, a humanis...
Basava Philosophy
Basava said that the roots of social life are embedded not in the cream of the society but in the scum of the society. It is his witty saying that the cow does not give milk to him who sits on its back, but it gives milk to him who squats at its feet. Basava believed that man becomes great, not by his birth but by his worth to the society. This means faith in the dignity of man and the belief that a common man is as...
Lord Basava - Views on Basaveshwara today:
The Times of India in its issue dated May 17, 1918 paid a glowing tribute to Lord Basava: "It was the distinctive feature of his mission that while illustrious religious and social reformers in India before him had each laid his emphasis on one or other items of religion and social reform, either subordinating more or less other items to it or ignoring them altogether, Basava sketched and boldly tried to work out a large and comprehensive programme of social reform with the elevation and independence of womanhood as its guiding ...
Basavanna’s famous teaching
Do not steal, do not kill. Do not utter lies;
Do not glorify oneself; Do not blame others.
Do not lose temper; Do not detest others;
This alone is inside purity. This alone is outside purity;
And this alone is the way to please our Lord Kudalasangama.
Let them not say, O Lord
Whose is he? Whose, O whose?
Let them say rather, “He is ours,
He’s ours, He’s ours!”
O Lord Kudalasangama say that
He is the son of Thy own house.
